Throw This Midnight Away

le castle vania

Let me start this post with a perfect track for you to start your weekend with. I’ve been a fan of Le Castle Vania since the first time I heard him and “Nobody Gets Out Alive!” is a great example of why. The track has got a sense of determination about it when, about 1:45 in, it kicks into gear and doesn’t look back. This one alone will get you clear to Sunday evening.

Free Diamonds

Oh man, how awesome is the bassline in this Free Diamonds song? The dischordant guitar about 40 seconds in help keep the song from getting too cutesy, instead ending it dead center in a beautiful batch of askew pop goodness.

MP3: Free Diamonds – Hugs & Kisses
[Off By The Sword, out now. Also available on the Deep Elm Free Sampler albums.]

BONUS MP3: Free Diamonds – Blind Boys

Tony The Bookie

For those of you planning a more reserved weekend, perhaps sitting by the window with a hot drink and staring down the snow outside, here’s a stomper from Tony The Bookie. This one would be pitch perfect for the villain’s entrance in a vintage western, so enticingly evil and dark you start rooting for them immediately. I’m particularly fond of how the lackadaisical slide guitar is laid on top of the propulsion of the drums and rhythm guitars.

MP3: Tony The Bookie – She Don’t Wear Black
[Off Tony the Bookie Presents... The Tony the Bookie Orchestra!, out now. Available for Free Download (please consider dropping some coins in the tip jar).]

BONUS MP3: Tony The Bookie – True Love
